On our first trip to Iceland we parked our rental car off Route 1 and walked in to the glacier. The walking wasn't difficult: but distances were always greater than we perceived them to be. All during the walk we were being watched by Great Skuas, those on the ground looked like they were chiseled out of stone and bound to the earth. In the air they were very delicate (though obviously huge) and the flashing of their white wing panels when they wheeled to land made them look almost ethereal. We missed the car by a mile or so and found it by looking for it from a hill of glacier debris.
