We've got a number of options for exploring East Greenland . They all start in Iceland
On approaching this land by air East Greenland's uniqueness is striking. Icebergs are being swept along the rugged coast and into the fjords by the ocean currents and they seem to be everywhere.
The program is available either from Reykjavik, for travelers who are already in Iceland, or as a complete pacakge from the east coast of the US, including international airfare and a night in Iceland following your Greenland trip. Please add $75 additional for departures from Minneapolis.
Kulusuk is the smaller settlement but it's got the only flat area that can accommodate a runway in this region . Traveling to the bigger town (and better harbor) of Ammassalik requires a helicopter transfer.
2 or 3 days in East Greenland East Greenland has been isolated from the other parts of the country, resulting in a distinctive dialect and unique culture and crafts. Its' been only 100 years since the first Europeans "discovered" East Greenland!
Ammassalik is a short helicopter ride from Kulusuk. It can be explored during a 2, 3 or 4 day tour, which start Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday, from June 15 until Sept 5
You will be met by the local guide, who will take you to the nearby Hotel Ammassalik for check in and an information meeting. The afternoon will be at leisure or you could take one of the optional day excursions in Ammassalik. Dinner at the hotel.
The Ammassalik area is full of unforgettable adventures and incredible things to see and experience. These must be booked and paid locally. The payment is in Danish Kronur. The approximate dollar value is also listed

Guided walking tour to the "Valley of Flowers"
An easy hike in a slow pace up the mountain behind the town. Marvelous views over the area including the ice filled sea.
Duration: 2 1/2 hrs. Price DKK 150 $9
Guided Hiking tour to the 1800' high Sailor's Mountain
A slightly more demanding hike up to a local viewpoint overlooking the whole area, your guide will reward you with a coffe/tea break at the summit.
Duration: 4-5 hrs. Price: DKK 300 $18
Iceberg Cruise. Short sailing tour around the icebergs in the fiords outside of Ammassalik. A must for the photographer.
Duration: 2 hrs. Price per person: DKK 400 $23
Boat trip to the tiny village of Ikateq (around the icebergs)
A cruise through the ice filled fiords to a small settlement inhabited by hunters and fishermen. A step into an ancient culture.
Duration: 5 - 6 hrs. Price per person: DKK 625 $35
Helicopter flight to the 3000' high Mitivagiat Glacier
Flying up to the glacier on Ammassalik Island. Land and stand on the glacier to enjoy the impressive view of surrounding landscape, including the Inland Icecap.
Duration: 1 hr. Price per person: DKK 1100 $630
Day 2, 3 or 4: Last day: Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to the heliport for departure by Air Alpha from Ammassalik to Kulusuk. Flight from Kulusuk to Reykjavik.
Kulusuk can be done in a one-day tour (which includes some activities)
Or the Two Day Kulusuk Tour with an overnight in Kulusuk gives you a choice of a number of optional short activities.

These trips are available with or without international airfare. Airport departure fees and taxes are included in costs of flights from Iceland to Greenland .Taxes and fees on travel between US and Iceland are not included; they are usually around $88.
Prices are given 2 ways. If you're coming from the US to Greenland or if you're extending one of our Iceland tours to include Greenland. All prices are per person, double occupancy. These are Summer prices. Other seasons are a bit less..
*Please note that departure taxes on flights from the US to Iceland are presently $85 Taxes and fees for the leg between Iceland and Greenland ARE included in the above prices. All prices are given as per person, double occupancy.

The prices listed include standard double rooms with private bathrooms in nice hotels. Single room supplements add about $45 per person per night
Activities and Guided Tours
Activities and tours at the locales in East Greenland are arranged and booked after the traveler arrives. This offers a chance to see what the weather brings and partly because long range planning isn't a big part of the tradition in a fishing/hunting culture.Nothing is overbooked to leave disappointed tourists standing forlornly behind. With a quiet confidence, born of surviving in this part of the world, things fall into place. We list the local tours that are available, and their prices, so you can plan just what you want to do and you'll have no problem making the connections when you arrive. Keep in mind that you're pretty far removed from the corporate world and you're in a world where even sunrise and sunset are not as we know them.
Every day (except Sunday) from June 15 to August a one-day tour is available in Greenland. Starting with a 2 hour flight from the Reykjavik domestic airport,and last about 8 hours. (Warm clothing and sturday footwear is essential on all Greenland tours.)
Kulusuk One Day
Tour includes a guided tour of the fishing village of Cap Dan with some time to explore this village of 360 souls. Weather permitting there is a demonstration of the traditional arts of Kayaking and a drum dance.

An important note for travelers returning to Iceland from Greenland. Flying is the only way to travel in Greenland. The aircraft that serve Greenland fly from one remote area to another and any delay at one airport is telegraphed through the system, adding an elelment of chance to making connections in Iceland. You cannot schedule a trip from Greenland back to Iceland on the same day that you are scheduled to leave Iceland
*The price includes round trip airfare to Iceland, with fuel surcharge, from Boston or New York, with Minneapolis, Halifax and Orlando available for an extra $75 per person, flights to and from Greenland, most airport transfers, hotels with private baths, breakfast every day, English speaking guides. *Not included in the price are US departure taxes and fees of about $85, meals other than breakfast, optional tours or excursions in Iceland and Greenland.
Please also note that there are no flights to or from Kulusuk on Sundays.
