Vellir is in a beautiful valley just a half hour's drive from Rekjavik . The transportation from Hotels and Guesthouses in Rekjavik is provided as part of the riding package. The tours all include a coffee break and either a box lunch, or some Icelandic specialty on the short ones. If the weather requires it, clothing is also provided: winter overalls, rubber boots, woollen socks and gloves, rainwear and riding helmets. Meadows and Mountains or Soft River Banks - an afternoon or morning through some distinctive landscape This tour outfitter picks you up in Rekjavik a little after 8 AM for morning rides or 1PM for afternoon rides and drives you to Vellir. Weather conditions and river levels will determine whether we go up on to the mountain or along the river. The Viking Mountain Tour -This ride goes up into the nearby mountains along Ingolfsfjall the mountain named for the first Norwegian settler.Or we will ride:The River Delta Tour - Riding along the River Olfusa and passing the ancient cemetery of Arnabeli, and on into the bird sanctuary of Olfusforir. The cost of this tour is $60 per per person. Hot Springs Tour - 5 to 6 hours of riding through very amazing geothermal country. Beginning with a ride up onto Hellisheidi with its magnificent views of the valley and out to sea to the Westman Islands, this tour, of 22 km and 5-6 hours, exposes its riders to a wide cross-section of Iceland's history and landscapes. Soft roads lead us onto old lava flows from the volcano Hengill . The lavafield is called Kristnitokuhraun , and since it erupted in the same year that Iceland's leaders turned their backs on the old Gods Odinn., Thor and Freyr, in favor of a new Southern god, it was believed that the eruption was vengeance from those Gods. After a several crossings of the river Hengladalsa we ascend to hillsides from where we can see the lake Thingvallavatn and its surrounding hills. The world's first parliament was held on the shore of Thingvallavatn and the plates of continental Europe and North America expose their edges here. Descending into the valley Reykjadalur we take a break and have a chance to bathe in its stream. Even in a land of hot springs this example of hot running water is rare to find...And quite pleasant to sit in. We ride on to Hveragerdi, passing stone caldrons of steaming hot water and a beautiful waterfall. Pick up is around 8:30 from your lodgings in Rekjavik and return at about 5 PM. Remember to bring swimsuits! A box lunch is provided.This tour costs $120 per person. |
