An 8 day tour that mixes guided exploration in the south, with time in Reykjavik. It's an economical way to explore since it happens before and after the busy season. This tour gets you to the best sights in South Iceland. You'll get time at the end to see Rekjavik, perhaps take some day tours, or to shop and explore the city. In 2008 The Wonders of South Iceland tour runs Thursday to Thursday in Iceland, with tours starting April till May, and then September to October. Travelers from the US will need to leave no later than the Wednesday before the tour starts It’s easy to add a few days on to the beginning or end of your tour! It all starts with an overnight flight from the US, with a Reykjavik day on arrival, overnight in a guesthouse, then an early departure for the countryside of South Iceland the next morning. You'll spend 3 nights in a guesthouse or hotel there, then back to Reykjavik for the last 3 nights. There's both action and relaxation, in the great outdoors, and the museums, galleries, shops and restaurant of the capital. Accommodations are clean modern guest houses or hotels with private facilities. There are single supplements offered. The tour starts on Thursdays in Iceland, so American travelers need to leave the US no later than the Wednesday night before that. Europeans can leave on the date the tour starts. |
The Daily Itinerary
Wednesday night (or earlier if you'd like)
Evening flight to Iceland
Day 1, Thursday: Reykjavik
Welcome to Iceland!
After an early arrival in Iceland, you’ll hop on the Flybus shuttle that will take you from the airport to your guesthouse in Reykjavik. Then you’ll have the day to rest and explore Reykjavik, the world’s most northerly capital. We’ll provide lots of ideas for what to see and places to eat- meals are on your own today.
Day 2, Friday:
Thingvellir-Gullfoss-Geysir
Your day starts easy, with a departure from Reykjavik at 09:30. You'll travel via Mosfellsheiði heath and visit Thingvellir National Park, which is one of Iceland's most sacred site. It's here that the old Viking parliament Alþingi, first met in the 9th century, (only moving to downtown Reykjavik a century or so ago) and Icelanders travelled all across the country to join in. It's also a place of fascinating natural beauty, set on a vast lava plain flanked by large fissures, right on Iceland's largest lake. Next stop is Gullfoss (pictureed above). Known as the Queen of Iceland's waterfalls, it thunders over a double cascade in the Hvitá Glacial River. Then continue on to the hot spring area of Geysir, the home of the original boiling water spout. You'll see Strokkur, which erupts every 10 minutes or so, and lots of small boreholes from which steam rises, as well as beautiful multicoloured pools of blue water and mud. Late in the afternoon, you'll arrive at your guesthouse in Hella which will be home for the next three nights.
Day 3, Saturday:
South Shore
The day starts with a drive to Seljalandsfoss, a graceful ribbon-like waterfall which drops from an overhanging lava cliff. If you step carefully, you can walk behind it, (but be prepared to get wet!) Then it's on to the impressive Skógafoss waterfall, more than 200 ft high. The tiny settlement of Skógar is the home of to one of Icelands best-known Folk Museums, which you'll visit. Then it's onto the sea shore by Vík. The small village is flanked by steep cliffs where puffins and other sea birds nest in summer, and where seals are sometimes sighted in the sea or on the black, wave pounded sands. The day gets icy when there's a chance to walk up to and on Solheimajokull glacier.
Day 4, Sunday:
Thjórsárdalur
The Thjórsárdalur valley starts the day and you'll travel through this lush area, famous for its beautiful waterfalls and Viking-ruins, through pasture land and valleys to Búrfell past the hydro-electric power station. The waterfall Hjálparfoss, framed in twisted basalt columns is visited as is the ravine of Gjáin, an outstanding beauty spot with brooks and waterfalls. Nearly all of Thjórsárdalur valley lies beneath lava deserts created by eruptions of Hekla, Iceland's most best-known volcano. Hekla erupts every 10 years or so, most recently in 1991, and 1999.
Day 5, Monday:
Reykjavik - City Sightseeing Tour
You'll come back to Reykjavik for a city sightseeing tour which ends about 1 PM. You'll get checked into your guesthouse, where you'll be for the next three nights.
An optional tour to the Blue Lagoon is available in the afternoon, which offers a unique swimming experience in a geothermal lagoon with warm blue mineral-rich water, fog like clouds looming above.
Day 6 & 7
Tuesday/Wednesday: Reykjavik:
Now it's time to relax, and explore. There are lots of optional excursions available - the guest house staff will let you know what's available, and book you into choices. They'll also give you some ideas about shopping, dining, night life and unique parts of Iceland's capital city.
Optional trips may include a visit the Westman Islands or the beautiful Snaefellsnes peninsula, for a day ride on Icelandic horses or even a super jeep safari into Iceland's wilderness. Not all day tours operate each day in the off season but you'll find that information readily available.
Day 8: Thursday:
Farewell…
After breakfast you may have time to explore a bit of Reykjavik or take a dip in a warm swimming pool. The Flybus will pick up American travelers at your guesthouse in the early afternoon and get you to the International airport at Keflavik for late afternoon flights. Flights to Europe leave early in the day, so this requires an earlier transfer via the Flybus.
